The studio floor, mid-build

The story
Blackland Studio takes its name from the Blackland Prairie, the strip of dark clay soil that runs under Dallas. The studio began in a rented garage bay with a table saw, a set of chisels, and a first commission: a nine foot dining table for a family in Lakewood. That table is still in daily use, and the studio still works the same way. One piece at a time, drawn by hand, built to order.

The maker
The studio is led by a maker trained first as a painter, then as a furniture builder. That order matters. Composition, proportion, and color come before joinery in every project, whether the finished piece hangs on a wall or holds up dinner. Years of gallery work in Texas taught a simple discipline: if a piece does not hold your eye across a room, refine it until it does.

Materials
Domestic hardwoods, sourced from Texas and Ozark mills whenever the boards allow it. Walnut, white oak, pecan, and mesquite are the regulars. Paintings are worked in oil and acrylic on stretched canvas or cradled panel. Finishes are hand rubbed oil and hardwax, chosen so surfaces age well and can be renewed rather than replaced. Nothing leaves the studio that cannot be repaired twenty years from now.

Dallas roots
The studio delivers and installs its own work across the Dallas area, from Oak Cliff to Plano. Clients are welcome to visit during a build, see their lumber before the first cut, and check proportions in person. Working close to home keeps lead times honest and lets every piece be measured against the room it was made for.
